South African wine versus the Rest of the World

The rise of South African wines has lead to a showdown with many other wine-producing countries, but in fact many of these countries have been surprised by the sudden rise of South Africa and its wines. Some people from overseas have questioned whether South Africa can really compete with the rest of the world in producing top-quality wines, but with so many excellent vintages available from the South African market, the time has come to reconsider the country’s place as an international producer of wine.

First impressions are often the ones that stick in people’s mind, and this is as true of wine experiences as it is of any other situation in life. This is where South Africa really has a struggle on its hands, because the first experience of South African wines have often been unpleasant. In the years before Apartheid ended, the country’s wine growers had been under the heavy thumb of the Wine Growers Co-operative and its rules, which effectively ensured that almost all of the grapes grown in South Africa were used to create wines, no matter what the quality. Although there were plenty of bottles of wine for international palates, these wines were often substandard or of generally poor quality. This has left many wine experts looking askance at the new popularity of South African wines.

Nevertheless, with growing interest in Wines from the Western Cape, South Africa has the opportunity to change the minds of wine connoisseurs around the world. The recent football World Cup allowed the wine industry to promote itself through sport tourism, and b because of this, more people have pleasant memories of trying South African wine in its country of origin. As these people return home with a taste for Western Cape wines, so exports of wine have increased. In the year after the World Cup, South Africa moved to 5th position in the UK market for imported wines, suggesting that South Africa is gaining in importance as a wine producer.

Another area where South Africa needs to effectively compete is in the area of cost. Australia has nearly cornered the market in producing cheap, basic wines. These are now on the shelves at every market across Europe and the US, and it can sometimes be a rival in South Africa. The problem is that many of the big supermarkets and malls want to buy wine at a low price, and this is forcing many South African wine growers to produce lower quality wines in order to meet the demand.

South Africa also needs to compete with other wine producing countries in the amount of wine that it exports. It is not enough to have a strong domestic market, and South African wines now need to move into the next sphere of competition, which is in the First World market. Selling good quality South African wines in Europe and America is going to be difficult, but might be more likely in Australia and New Zealand, as they have a common background (and can make good sports tourism sales during the tri-nations).

Online wine shops in South Africa

As more and more of the globe turns to the internet as a place to do business and make sales, so the South African wine industry has also gone online in order to attract more customers. As shopping online becomes easier for everyone, so it seems likely that these stores will flourish, and smaller businesses will eventually rely upon internet sales for their income, abandoning any real-time stores. This means that the savvy shopper with start looking for their wines online, and finding reliable online wine shops in South Africa who can supply them with all their wine needs. In fact, finding online wine shops in South Africa is easy, and there are plenty of advantages to choosing to purchase wine through internet stores, rather than visiting a supermarket or wine merchant.

The biggest advantage to purchasing wines from an online shop in South Africa is the wider range of choices that can be selected from internet stores. Because the internet shop has a limitless size, more products can be put online than could be placed on shelves in a real-time store. The customer can view many more products on offer in an internet site than they could do in a physical store, no matter how large the latter is. Because the availability of wines is so much larger for online wine stores in South Africa, the customer is also more likely to be able to find rarer wines, or wines that are only available from a certain store. This can mean that buying a good wine is much easier online than through specialist wine stores or local markets.

The second reason for purchasing products from online wine stores in South Africa is convenience. This is not just the convenience of the buyer being able to select the wine they want, but also being able to get that wine at any time of day or night, without leaving their home. Many specialist wine stores are located in towns, and wine sellers themselves can be many miles from your own residence, but purchasing online allows the store to bring their wines to you. No matter where you live, if you buy from online wine stores in South Africa, you can go to the shop in an instant, and select what you want. This makes it much more convenient to purchase the wine that you want.

The third reason to choose online wine stores in South Africa is price. With no store to maintain, and only internet running bills and IT payments, internet sellers can make a great many savings on their overheads. These savings are often passed direct to the customer with wines which are reduced in price. Even the most expensive wines can be less costly if they are purchased in an online store, and the majority of regular wines are cheaper. By shopping online, buyers can get good quality South African wines at a price which is affordable, and they can also buy several wines at once without really damaging their wallet.
