26 – 29 April, CTICC, Cape Town
Setting the table for an abundance of trends and décor adventures, Decorex Cape Town
returns to the Mother City with a vibrant interior design exhibition reflecting the creative spirit of its host town.

Expect energetic splashes of tangerine, trends from across the globe and a new wave of ‘hectic eclectic’ interiors, theatre workshops, fabric and wallpaper installations, dream rooms and designer kitchens. Taking place from 26 to 29 April 2012, this year’s show brings a unique combination of originality, adventurous ideas, product launches, big brands rubbing shoulders with artisanal collectables and unique lifestyle spaces to the CTICC.

“Co-lab is the big buzz,” says Sian Steyn, marketing manager, Decorex SA. “2012 will see us continue on the path of creative collaborations. From fashion to art to music and especially the design world, sharing ideas and pooling the creative juices add out-the-box thinking and unexpected solutions to our world.”

According to Laurence Brick from Laurence Brick Creative Direction and trend consultant to Decorex SA this exchange of ideas also influence a more global outlook and international mindset. “We see the development of a Global Living style, blending cultures and aesthetics from exotic destinations with our own way of life in a modern, freely expressive way.” Brick points out that international events such as the Arab Spring further stimulated an interest in Middle Eastern styles, with special emphasis on North Africa.

With Plascon as main sponsor, M-net as official media partner and a brilliant cast of topnotch exhibitors the show brims with diversity and a break with conventions. Special trend themes illuminate the show with leading lights curating cutting-edge concept stands and interpreting new directions on the design horizon.

Here is a pick of some of the first-time attractions and popular favourites returning in a fresh
new guise:

The future of colour: Juicy reds, rich plum, mysterious hues and muted blues parade alongside a riot of brights. Four of the country’s top design personalities – Creative consultant Laurence Brick, Aidan Bennetts, Porky Hefer of Animal Farm-fame and James Mudge interpret the Plascon Colour Forecast 2012 through highly individual roomsettings themed Memory, Expression, Mystery and Origins. Says Brick, curator of the Plascon installation: “Whether you’re an enthusiastic amateur or a seasoned interior designer, you can turn to colour to transform a room, inject your personality, create a mood, turn a blank canvas in a sophisticated space, create intimacy or bring sexy back.”

“Visitors can expect to see a wonderful shakeup of colours infusing neutrals and naked colours with a jolt of energy,” promises Anne Roselt, Plascon Colour Manager. “For the timestrapped homeowner Decorex Cape Town is the ideal way to shop around for the latest trends, furnishings, fabrics and ideas for the home – it’s all under one roof.”

M-net Cares Café
My word! Fonts, graphics, lexicon and prose steal the show. Exclusively designed, this café combines doing good with relaxation in a contemporary white space with pops of blue and grey. Visitors are invited to bring second-hand books along to prop up in the cleverly designed bespoke bookshelves. These books will be donated to M-net’s Naledi Children’s Literacy Project.

BOS Bar
Always highly-anticipated, the big buzz is once again the quirky, original, out-there design of the BOS Bar. Brimming with the energy of this funky brand, the BOS Bar sparks with imagination and design vision, making it the go-to gathering place to refuel on design gossip and refresh trend-trodden feet.

Inspire Theatre
A fresh new format, creative content and magnificent facilities form the perfect background for teams of designers, chefs and stylists to strut their stuff. A gourmet kitchen will set the table for master classes, food for thought and on-trend entertaining. Themed in step with new directions on the food scene, topics include the modern Sunday lunch, High Tea and new nostalgia, as well as a journey through the world of chocolate. A décor demonstration theatre area with hour-long slots dedicated to DIY workshops, will feature highly visual presentations by experts on topics of colour, fabrics, key patterns and layering.

Graham Beck Wine Bar
One step into the world of Graham Beck Wines and you’ll know ‘you have arrived’. Sip, nose and taste a passion for winemaking exquisitely paired with relaxed elegance and impeccable style. Drink in the intimate luxe lounge, exploring tapas-style morsels beautifully matched with reds, whites, rosés, Méthode Cap Classique and dessert wine.

Kitchens, Bathrooms and Fine Finishes
This popular section celebrates kitchens as the entertaining hub of the home, with the latest in kitchen design and appliances. Visitors can also browse the luxe line-up of bathroom essentials, wetroom novelties, expert advice and money-saving ideas on tap. The fine finishes area offers a vast selection of smart surfaces, sustainable floor- and wall coverings and window treatments.

Dream Rooms and Decorative Accessories
Welcome the statement bedroom, the icon chair, the revival of the Mid-Century side board and Danish design. Interiors reveal layers of urban attitude and modern country style. Inspired by a renewed sense for the dramatic high-end exhibitors show their signature style and attention to detail in alluring roomsettings. Spot luxurious textures, moving wallpaper and find out what fabric houses will unfold.

District Delicious
Artisan food and farm-raised ingredients have never been more fashionable. Let your taste buds journey through a delectable collection of the handmade, classic charcuterie, goodies celebrating Grandma’s recipes and tools for cooks.

Decorex Designer Collection
There’s a new swing tag in Cape Town! The Decorex Designer Collection homeware pops up at the show, blending modern form and artisan traditions in a ‘you will adore it’ range of signature products by top designers and artists: Ceramist Anthony Shapiro; Wendy McLachlan of Homebakes Ceramics; Lisa Firer of Lisa Firer Design; Di Marshall of Wonki Ware; Zander van Niekerk and Georg van Gass of Goet; textile mavens Lise Butler and Amanda Haupt of Design Team; Skinny laMinx, design label of illustrator Heather Moore; Kirsty and Jan Zoutendyk’s Laid Back Co; and the master glassblowers of Ngwenya Glass.

The golden thread running through the eclectic range is the sense of pared down simplicity and whimsy in a modern, very liveable colour palette of grey, naturals, turquoise and a dash of indigo. Also available online at the virtual shop on Decorex’s website, below.
